Management Structures: Organisational Structure

Personal message from the VC

Welcome to the website of the North-West University (NWU)! Whatever your reason for visiting our site - whether as a prospective student, staff member, strategic partner or corporate donor -  we hope that you become a regular visitor.

This university thrives on interaction and information exchange and we value the opportunity to share some of our history, achievements and future plans with you.  As the fourth-largest higher education institution in South Africa, the NWU is creating a special place for itself in this landscape. In our quest, we are guided by our vision: “To become a pre-eminent university in Africa, driven by the pursuit of knowledge and innovation”. The NWU has in the past few years graduated from a merged institution to one of the leading universities in the country. Our mission to become a balanced teaching-learning and research university while implementing our expertise in an innovative way, is within sight.

In moving towards this vision and mission, we have already passed some major milestones:

          • Corporate governance: For five years in a row, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 the NWU has taken first place in the annual PricewaterhouseCoopers Higher Education Excellence Award for Corporate Governance, effectively making us the best-governed university in South Africa.

          • Core business:  The NWU is an academically stable and successful institution of higher learning with more than 60 000 students averaging an undergraduate pass rate of more than 83%.  A considerable percentage of academic staff are rated researchers with the National Research Foundation.

          • Technological innovation: In 2008, the NWU was named as the Most Technologically Innovative Higher Education Institution in the country. This was based on our award-winning performance in the Department of Science and Technology’s latest Innovation Fund Competition.

          • Multilingualism and nation building: Over the past years, the NWU has contributed more to this endeavour than any other institution in the South African higher education sector. Acknowledging this, the Pan-South African Language Board (PanSALB) presented a special recognition award to the NWU during 2008. In 2010 the NWU was awarded again for interpreting and translation.

As we continue our pursuit of knowledge and innovation, all our actions are being driven by our medium-term strategic goal: to become an effective and transformed balanced tuition and research university. Join us on this exciting journey!
