Vice Rector attends international leadership programme
The Vice Rector of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal), Prof Linda du Plessis, recently attended an international leadership programme for senior members of management within the sector of Higher Education. The programme was hosted by the Institute for Educational Management at the world renowned Harvard University and saw a group of 50 high-level leaders, from across the globe; convene for an intensive managerial summit.
Topics that received attention included the assessment of leadership skills and the development of tangible strategies for long-term institutional success. According to Prof Du Plessis the opportunity to visit Harvard University – which is regarded as the top university in the world, was both humbling and exciting. Harvard University was founded in 1936.
Senior leaders in higher education face a daunting set of challenges ranging from fiscal constraints, heightened accountability, substantial demographic chance as well as questions about the relevance and effectiveness of higher education. “During the programme we were guided through a process to increase our focus with regard to organisational change,” explains Prof Du Plessis and adds that the importance of personal renewal was also highlighted.
The programme furthermore addressed the critical stewardship role that senior leaders play on behalf of their respective institutions and aided in providing a core set of conceptual tools for understanding both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of effective institutional leadership. “The skills that I acquired throughout the programme will help me in articulating a compelling and holistic vision by which meaningful and enduring institutional change can be achieved,” says Prof Du Plessis.
