Soccer fever hits campus

With the countdown to the Fifa World Cup spectacular reaching double digits, soccer fever has hit the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal). Apart from speculation about which teams will perform well and which won’t, the student community is indulging in the fun and competitive nature of the game of soccer.

The past weekend saw the second Parking Lot Splash Tournament being hosted by the Thutuka residence on campus. This tournament represents a unique blend of student energy and healthy rivalry and is an annual highlight on the student sport calendar.
The competition saw eight teams participate in a five-a-side tournament. Teams from four of the six campus residences took part, namely: Thutuka, Faranani, Vergelegen and Oryx. The team from Faranani enjoyed victory with Oryx and Thutuka following in respectively second and third place.
Two former professional soccer players, Thabang Molefe (Orlando Pirates) and Lucky Xaba (Sundowns) added to the excitement of the day whilst the talented “Bingo” – a soccer freestyle artist, entertained the crowd with his skills.

Hailing from the Vaal Triangle region, this performing artist is currently ranked second best in the country with regards to this form of artistic expression. According to Obakeng Sene, the Sport Officer of Thutuka, sport represents much more than mere physical exercise since it also reflects the “essence” of student life.
Obakeng says that through sport life-long friendships are formed and physical wellness is a welcome result. As Sport Officer, Obakeng admits that he is an avid sport supporter and when it comes to soccer, he does service as a midfielder.
The six campus residences will also shortly battle it out on the field for ultimate soccer supremacy. The NWU Vaal Residence Cup will see men and women compete for ultimate glory and if the theme of this year’s event – “NWU Vaal Soccer Kings / NWU Vaal Soccer Queens”, is anything to go by the stage is set for fierce competition.
One of the male residences on the campus, Oryx, recently enjoyed a Soccer Day and not only dressed the part but also – in true soccer spirit, blew on vuvezelas en whistles.
