Campus involved in community sport
The year 2010 will go down in history as one of the most memorable sporting years for South Africa and the African continent. The eyes of the world will be on the rainbow nation for the duration of the Fifa World Cup later this year and as was the case in 1995 with the Rugby World Cup, sport is uniting young and old in a spirit of cameraderie and good sportmanship.
On the local sporting scene, the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal), is also gearing up for a memorable sport year and the development of regional sporting talent is high on the agenda. Apart from a dynamic and fast growing Sport Department on the campus with a number of sporting codes competing on a national level, the campus is also investing in the development of young sportmen and –women through strategic sponsorships and joint initiatives.
According to Mr Piet van Wyk, a senior marketer on the campus, more than 50 000 young and talented sportsmen and –women will compete under the auspices of the University in 2010. “The NWU Vaal is a community campus and therefore we regard community development a prime responsibility,” says Van Wyk and adds that community involvement and sponsorships are tangible ways in which the campus contributes towards uplifting and maintaining the level of sporting excellence in the region.
The 2010 community sport calander includes several athletics meetings as well as several prestige rugby, netball and hockey events. With regard to athletics, the NWU Vaal is a proud partner and sponsor of the following events: NWU Vaal Prestige Athletics Meeting; the Vereeniging Amature Highschool Atletics; the Vanderbijlpark Amature Highschool Atletics, the PUK Super 16 Atletics Championships, the Freestate Atletics Championships and the prestige South African Highschool Atlethics Championships.
Other events that also carriy the NWU Vaal seal of excellence are the NWU Vaal Super 12 Series and the NWU Vaal Night Series. A new initiative, the NWU Vaal Open Chess Tournament in conjunction with the General Smuts Highschool is also part of the campus’s focus on community engagement.
The NWU Vaal is committed towards the development and sustainability of sporting excellence in the Vaal Triangle region.
