FIRST DIGITAL HUMANITIES WORKSHOP
The First South African Workshop on Digital Humanities (DH) was held at the North-West University (Potchefstroom) on 23-25 February 2015. A total of 101 participants were registered for the event that comprised plenary lectures, hands-on tutorials and a panel discussion with a number of prominent international experts in the field of DH. The program is available here and presentations of the plenary sessions are available on-line here Given the growing interest in the field amongst scholars in the humanities and social sciences, the attendees agreed that an association for Digital Humanities should be established in Southern Africa. A Steering Committee was elected to prepare for the founding of such an association that will not only promote local development of DH, but also eventually link up with the international Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) (http://www.adho.org) which in turn will open up new research, training and funding possibilities for staff and students alike.
It is foreseen that this envisaged new association will formally be constituted at the Second SA Workshop/Conference on Digital Humanities that will take place in the first semester of 2016. The Research Unit: Languages and Literatures in the SA Context of the NWU will host this workshop/conference in Potchefstroom in collaboration with the presenters at the first workshop, as well as other presenters from their respective institutions – details will be forthcoming.
