Campus celebrates International Social Work Day

International Social Work Day was celebrated on 15 March 2012 by the Department of Social Work at North-West University’s (NWU) Mafikeng Campus. At the function, 110 second-year students committed themselves to the ethical requirements of the profession by taking an oath.

The event at the Student Centre was attended by lecturers, students and guests. Prof Sonia Swanepoel, Dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, also acknowledged the seven top performers of 2011. Undergraduate students K Marope, NC Lubisi, TP Masilela, NC Mkombo, NR Tshabalala, EB Phetho and OG Mlambo achieved an average of more than 75% for all their subjects last year.

Ms MJ Molamu, an alumnus of NWU and a practising social worker, was the guest speaker. While she was still a student, a serious accident left her a paraplegic. However, she obtained her degree and has been following a career despite using a wheelchair.
