NWU-Puk karate still champions
The NWU-Puk’s karate team won for the twelfth consecutive time the Universities Sport South Africa’s (USSA) karate tournament at the University of Cape Town this year.
Their sum total of 34 points was enough to beat the 32 points of Tukkies.
“We had strong competition, but the hard work made sure that each member of the team walked away with a medal, and it largely contributed to the NWU-Puk winning the tournament again.”

“It also shows how hard the team worked,” said Dirk Visser, the team’s chairman.

Besides this excellent achievement, team members Jaco du Plooy, Lizae Wessels, Marezia Hendriks and Elandi van Niekerk were included in the Protea team that took part in the Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Jaco, who won gold during the Zone 6 games as well as the Sugiara trophy on 23 July in New Zealand, won the silver medal in his weight division during the Commonwealth Games on 29 and 30 July in Australia, with Elandi winning the bronze medal.
The NWU-Puk team is trained by sensei Johan van Tonder (fifth dan), who was also one of the Protea team’s coaches in Australia.
Van Tonder is currently in Chicago as judge at the Shotokan Championships and is accompanied by a few of his students who are also participating in the event.
Interested persons can contact Johan van Tonder at 082 783 0949.
