Medicine of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Marius Brits, was invited by the WHO, Head Quarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to act as technical advisor at a consultation during to discuss specifications for medicines and related quality control laboratory issues.
Brits said the discussions included new draft proposals for monographs for The International Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Int.) and various internationally harmonized general texts/methods to be included in the Ph. Int.
Brits and Prof. Theo Dekker are actively involved in the development of monographs for the Ph. Int. and related texts on quality assurance for consideration by the WHO Expert Committee on Specifications for Pharmaceutical Preparations which are, once adopted by this Expert Committee as WHO guideline or standard, intended for implementation by WHO Member States.
Brits was also invited to attend a one-day public meeting on the WHO normative work in the area of medicines quality control which was held on 15 July. During this session various mechanics were discussed such as - how monographs are being developed, explanations of pharmacopoeial approach/policy on a variety of issues and of its role within the WHO's overall Quality Assurance activities.
