Pukki Talent Festival
Pukki Talent Festival: Background and Prospects for 2012.
The NWU Potchefstroom Campus (then PU for CHE) talent festival dates back to 1983 when there were six humble categories and 52 entries. Since then the talent festival has grown to such an extent that the original six categories grew to 16 and the entries have increased to approximately 150. This festival is now regarded as thè prestigious general student art event on the university’s annual calendar.
There are two main groups into which the categories are divided, namely: Creative Categories and Performing Categories.
The Creative Categories consist of visual arts, original creative writing: prose and / or poetry, as well as original composition. These works are assessed prior to the finalist evenings of the talent festival and are displayed in the foyer of the Sanlam Auditorium in the course of the finalist evenings.
The Performing Categories are subject to a stringent audition process prior to the finalist evenings where approximately only 35 of the original 150 entries are selected.
This year, the Pukki Talent Festival celebrates its 29th year of existence on 17 and 18 May. The festival extends over these two evenings. The main adjudication occurres on 17 May and the prize giving takes place at the Gala evening on 18 May.
The festival is a feast for the senses with a wide variety selected from the cream of the PUK Arts, together with a sociable, unpredictable atmosphere with master of ceremonies and guest artist GP van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, who will be accompanied by the magnificent Artéma Concert band (under direction of Pieter de Bruin).
PUK Arts and the SRC Arts Council (who presents the festival as partners) look forward to this occasion in great anticipation and pride. The University can certainly be proud of its exceptional and talented students.
