FACULTY OF ARTS
ATKV School for Creative Writing
The ATKV School for Creative Writing of the North-West University offers a variety of short writing courses to anyone wanting to take up creative writing or aiming to improve his or her creative writing skills. The only admission requirements are writing talent and a passion for creative writing. The courses can be from one to five days long and may also be offered at venues outside Potchefstroom.
The annual Autumn School for writers stretches over five days, with attention to prose, poetry and column writing. For (aspiring) romance writers the annual Spring School is the appropriate occasion; for three days the art of writing love stories is discussed and practically demonstrated. The course for congregational writing is presented on a Saturday and focuses on the content and layout of congregational publications. In cooperation with the ATKV (i.e. the Society for Afrikaans Language and Culture, or the Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging) annual courses, focusing on children’s literature and lasting 2 or 3 days each are also organised all around the country.
Furthermore, the School for Creative Writing annually offers at least four "Kanselierskursusse" for young writers at various venues in South Africa. Such "chancellor’s courses" are made possible by the NWU Chancellor’s Trust and are usually presented on a Friday and a Saturday.
Offering courses on demand is another possibility; you are welcome to approach us with such requests.
