Culture change project for the NWU


As the leadership team of the North-West University we are dedicated to the pursuit of our dream to be “an internationally recognised university in Africa, distinguished for engaged scholarship, social responsiveness and an ethic of care”. As we pursue this dream, we are working hard on actualising our strategy, which aims to transform and position the NWU as a unitary institution of superior academic excellence, with a commitment to social justice.

To enable us to achieve our dream, the university has defined internal, external and financial success models. Of particular importance is the model for internal success. This encapsulates everything we do to offer a high-quality student experience in a supportive, diverse, enabling and caring environment, and ultimately produce top-rated, civic-minded graduates who actively contribute to the development of society.

In order for us to realise our success models, we need to create a shared organisational culture where every staff member and student is aligned behind a set of values, norms and everyday behaviours – where we all collectively live the NWU Way.

While the university’s current success models focus on creating a culture that is welcoming, inclusive and enabling, we believe that it is important to involve the whole university in crafting our desired culture and creating the NWU Way, which we can call our own.

Over the next few months, the university will embark on an NWU Way Culture Project to understand our current culture and define the future culture that will become the NWU Way.

This multi-phased project has already kicked off and will continue until June 2019. A key element of the project will involve focus groups where staff and students will be asked to describe and comprehend our current culture and assist us in determining the culture to which we aspire at our university.

During the course of the next six months you may be invited to participate in a staff or student focus group. I urge you to lend your voice, share your experiences and offer your ideas as we join together to understand the present and co-create our future.

The project will be informed by a diverse group of senior management team members, academics, support staff, student leaders and students from across the various campuses who will guide the process. Kultuurveranderingsprojek vir die NWU


Ons, as die leierskapspan van die Noordwes-Universiteit, is daartoe verbind om ons droom om “’n internasionaal-erkende universiteit in Afrika te wees wat bekend is vir betrokke wetenskapsbeoefening, maatskaplike responsiwiteit en ’n sorgsaamheidsetiek” na te streef. Terwyl ons hierdie droom najaag, werk ons hard om ons strategie te verwesenlik met die doel om die NWU as ’n unitêre instelling van voortreflike akademiese uitnemendheid, en met ’n toewyding aan maatskaplike geregtigheid, te transformeer en te posisioneer.

Om ons te help om ons droom te bewaarheid, het die universiteit interne, eksterne en finansiële suksesmodelle gedefinieer. Wat veral van belang is, is die model vir interne sukses. Dit omvat alles wat ons doen om ’n studente-ervaring van ’n hoë gehalte in ’n ondersteunende, diverse, bemagtigende en omgee-omgewing te bied, en om uiteindelik gegradueerdes van ’n topgehalte en met ’n burgersin te produseer wat ’n aktiewe bydrae tot die ontwikkeling van die samelewing lewer.

Om ons suksesmodelle ’n werklikheid te maak, moet ons ’n gedeelde organisasiekultuur skep waar elke personeellid en student ’n stel waardes, norme en daaglikse gedrag onderskryf – waar ons almal saam op die NWU-manier leef.

Terwyl die universiteit se huidige suksesmodelle daarop fokus om ’n kultuur te skep wat verwelkomend, inklusief en bemagtigend is, glo ons dat dit belangrik is om die hele universiteit te betrek om die verlangde kultuur en die NWU-manier wat ons ons eie kan noem, daar te stel.

Die universiteit gaan oor die volgende paar maande ’n nuwe NWU-manier-kultuurprojek aanpak om ons huidige kultuur te verstaan en die toekomstige kultuur, wat die NWU-manier gaan word, te definieer.

Hierdie multifaseprojek het reeds begin en sal tot Junie 2019 strek. ’n Sleutelelement van die projek sal fokusgroepe behels waar personeel en studente gevra sal word om ons huidige kultuur te beskryf en te verstaan, en om ons te help om die kultuur vas te stel waarna ons by ons universiteit streef.

Gedurende die verloop van die volgende ses maande kan jy uitgenooi word om aan ’n personeel- of studentefokusgroep deel te neem. Ek moedig jou aan om jou stem te laat hoor, jou ervarings te deel, en jou idees saam te bring wanneer ons saam besin om die huidige situasie te verstaan en ons toekoms saam te skep.

Die projek sal gerig word deur ’n diverse groep van ons senior bestuurslede, akademici, ondersteuningspersoneel, studenteleiers en studente van regoor die verskillende kampusse wat die proses sal lei. Ons sien daarna uit om ’n NWU-manier te skep wat ons op ons pad na die vervulling van ons droom sal lei.
