Ettienne van Rensburg proved himself a versatile journalist when he came first in the sport photography category and ended up in the top three for headline writing too.

Dustin Wetdewich’s nose for news landed him first place in the hard news category. Ending third in the category for investigative reporting also confirms his ability to ferret out information.

Short and sweet

These are some of the witty headlines that Ettienne van Rensburg entered, earning him a place among the top three journalists for headline writing.

  • Heading for a story about body building: Ab(s)olutely ripped to the core
  • Heading for an Afrikaans story about boxing: Visser te skerp vir Knife (meaning that Visser is too sharp for Knife)

Top newshounds honed their skills at NWU

The pen — as well as the camera lens — is mightier than the sword, especially when it comes to winning awards.

The NWU’s alumni regularly feature among the cream of the crop in all spheres of South African society, including journalism. Most recently, four alumni received awards for being among the best in their categories at the Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) Excellence Awards.

Selogile Leshage, Marianke Saayman, Ettienne van Rensburg and Dustin Wetdewich were recognised for their outstanding work in community journalism during the FCJ awards ceremony earlier this year.

And the winners are…

Ettienne van Rensburg of the Vaalweekblad not only won in the sport photography category, but ended up in the top three for headline writing, proving he is just as good a writer as photographer.

Dustin Wetdewich of the Potchefstroom Herald was victorious in the hard news category and also came third for investigative reporting. Dustin’s colleague, Marianke Saayman, won the Alet Roux medal of honour for best newcomer of the year.

Selogile Leshage, also from the Potchefstroom Herald, was runner-up as best newcomer of the year and in the general photography category.

The four journalists are shining examples of the high calibre of the NWU’s alumni who continue to shine and make the university proud.

What an achievement

Being among the top three in a category is a remarkable achievement considering that 130 journalists from more than 80 community newspapers in all nine provinces entered the competition.

The FCJ Excellence Awards competition is unique in that it is the only one in South Africa where journalists and publications can measure their work against other journalists from all the media outlets, whether independent or corporate owned.

Marianke Saayman may be the “new kid on the block”, but winning the award for the best newcomer of the year proves that she does not have to stand back for her more experienced colleagues.

Following close on colleague Marianke’s heels is Selogile Leshage, who was placed second in the same category. He also scooped second place in the category for general photography.
