ALUMNI ACTIVITIES

Kick-starting 2016

POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS

Being friends forever

The numerous alumni events planned for 2016 offer alumni of the Potchefstroom Campus golden opportunities to renew old friendships and start new ones.

So far, alumni have participated in four golf competitions, raised (several) glasses of wine at the wine-tasting events and attended a few reunions.

Remembering the good old days

The reunion for alumni and former lecturers from Geology and Soil Sciences in the School of Geo and Spatial Sciences took place on 27 February at the Manzini Game Lodge near Potchefstroom.

At the reunion for alumni and former lecturers from Geology and Soil Sciences are (at the back from left) Nico van der Merwe, Frans Putter, Fred Calitz, Hans Brouwer, Chris Murray, Piet van Deventer, Johan Hattingh and Freek Venter. In the middle row are Piet Pottas, Susan Meyer, Anita Mienie, Frans Waanders, Stephan Pretorius, Astrid Hattingh and Jan du Toit. In front are Andries Martinson, Marthie Coetzee, Pat Bisschoff, Andries Bisschoff, Ig Bisschoff, Jacob Helberg and Johan Erasmus.

Some of the younger lecturers and alumni at the Geology and Soil Sciences reunion are (at the back from left) Reginald Scholtz, Luan Nel, Jandré de Wet and Ricart Boneschans. In the middle row are Willie Kruger, Elrica Myburg, Cindy Faul, Jessica Strydom, Marina Harmse, Marcelle Ferreira, Sumari Koch, Jaco Koch, Angelique Daniel, Carike Pretorius, Bea Hurter, Claudia Schimmer and Elissa van Loggenberg. In front from left are Jasper Dreyer, Sascha Roopa, Hekkie Harmse, Piet van Deventer, August Kruger and Theuns van Wyk.

At this event, they paid tribute to Prof Andries Bischoff, who is renowned for his work in the Vredefort Dome, and Prof Hekkie Harmse, another soil science expert.

On 12 March, the batsmen and bowlers from the 1970s and 80s recalled the joys of hitting a six and the woes of being called out for a duck, and on 6 April alumni from Cape Town and surroundings gathered for one of the biggest Mother City reunions ever. Prof Fika Janse van Rensburg, acting rector of the Potchefstroom Campus, filled them in on the latest news from the campus, after which the 220 alumni enjoyed a night of good food and even better company.

Alumni from almost every year attended the 50-year celebrations of the subject group Town and Regional Planning.

The subject group Town and Regional Planning recently celebrated its 50th anniversary during a special event on the Potchefstroom Campus. Former lecturer Prof Manie Geyer had the audience hanging on his every word with various anecdotes from the past. He was with the department for almost 40 years.

Looking ahead

Some of the events awaiting Potchefstroom alumni during the rest of the year are a reunion for alumni who were members of the student representative councils between 2010 and 2015 (22 and 23 July), a reunion for alumni in the Windhoek area (13 September), the rector’s farewell function for current final-year students (20 October) and a reunion for the class of 1966 (31 October).
