Two birds with one stone
The alumni office on the Mafikeng Campus uses their graduation ceremonies to help them update their alumni database. They have an agreement with the official photographer – who takes pictures of all the graduates at the ceremonies in May – to supply them with the updated contact information of the graduates.
During the first half of the year, the alumni office on the Mafikeng Campus focused on establishing alumni chapters.
Launching their first official regional chapter in Gaborone, Botswana, on 18 March 2016, they elected an executive committee who will now be responsible for organising events and networking opportunities and for liaising with other alumni in that region.
“We have already established regional chapters in Nelspruit, a combined regional chapter for Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom, and another one for Johannesburg and Pretoria in Gauteng,” says Susan van Rooyen, alumni coordinator on the Mafikeng Campus.
In addition to the regional chapters, they also have interest group chapters, such as the MBA chapter established in November last year, one for former Campus Student Representative Council members, started on 27 May 2016, and an existing Christian chapter. A Zion Christian Church chapter is in the pipeline and chapters for Bloemfontein and Rustenburg will be established in August and September this year.
Later this year, at the annual farewell function for final-year students in October, these “new kids on the block” will be introduced to the joys of being alumni and in November 2016 the committee members of all established alumni chapters will meet on the campus for a networking event.
