Whether it’s helping departments fill vacant positions, or offering psycho-social counselling services to staff, People and Culture is determined to drive excellence through cutting-edge human resources practices.

Earlier this year the department implemented a new Service Charter that is not only a policy, but a promise that communicates the department’s commitment to its clients. It clearly defines the department’s purpose, vision, mission and the standard of service it aims to deliver.

It’s all about service

Leah Lakay is currently the acting director of Client Services, which is a “one-stop shop” for all matters relating to the human resources value chain.

These matters include appointments, probation management, termination processes, performance management and benefits. They also help ensure that job evaluation results and promotions are implemented.

Functions are decentralised across all three campuses, where practitioners are assigned both to faculties and support departments.

Health is wealth

The Employee Relations and Wellness section is headed by acting director Pulahela Mahoko.

The section has an Employee Assistance Programme that offers employees and their immediate family members psycho-social counselling services. These services focus on identifying, preventing and addressing personal concerns such as trauma, death and financial concerns that could impact on the productivity of an employee.

Employee Relations and Wellness also organises departmental, one-on-one or group sessions to resolve conflict. Matters that the section handles include grievances, internal staff disciplinary matters, CCMA and Labour Court cases. The annual cost of living adjustment negotiations are also conducted under this function.

The NWU’s got talent

Headed by Prue Mohoto, Talent Management and Organisational Development focuses on promotions, performance management, employment equity, disability and job evaluations.

This section is also responsible for internal and external training for staff and for the orientation programme for new employees.

Incentivising for achievement

All remuneration-related services and employee benefits are handled by the director Navin Lalsab and his team at Administration and Remuneration.

This includes the administration of all appointments, termination of services, employee biographical information and the implementation of promotions. Also resorting under this service is Human Resource Information Systems that provides updated information reports and Oracle-related training for staff.

As you can see, People and Culture is versatile, organised and professional and, above all, ready to serve.
