These staff members go above and beyond

The NWU has dedicated staff who routinely go above and beyond the normal call of duty. In Eish!’s regular extra mile series, we recognise colleagues who do more than is expected of them.

If you would like to nominate a colleague who always goes the extra mile, please send an email to willie.duplessis@nwu.ac.za. Remember to indicate your job title and the name of your department or school, as well as those of the person whom you are nominating. Also give reasons why you think the person is going the extra mile.

Cobus Olivier, lecturer at the School of Education Sciences on the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark, says Suzan Laubscher, e-Learning designer, and Robyn Bunt, eFundi and e-technology assistant, deserve praise for their hard work.

“They are both always friendly and ready to help.” He says Robyn helps with the efundi planning and is willing to do tasks that are not part of her duties. “Even though it is not her responsibility, she helps with the coding of documents for efundi.”

Cobus says Suzan, whose office is on the top floor of the library, doesn’t hesitate to walk to the bottom floor to help at the eOBS studio. “She always fetches material or helps if someone needs it.”

Jenna Wilson of Academic Administration on the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark, says Amanda Smith of Higher Grade Administration is always positive and motivates staff to give their utmost.

“She always makes time to give advice and find solutions. I consider her a role model and admire how she completes tasks with a positive attitude and compassion. She walks the extra mile by helping students in crisis situations without losing her friendliness. She is a gem.”

Louise Gertenbach, administrative manager at the Faculty of Engineering on the NWU’s campus in Potchefstroom, says Suzanne Pretorius, senior administrative assistant at Protection Services, is always friendly, even when the office is very busy and difficult clients complain about parking fines.

“She also puts in a real effort to sort out parking issues for everyone.”

Kgomotsego Samuel, lecturer at the Faculty of Education the NWU’s campus in Mahikeng, says Prof Washington Dudu, lecturer in physical sciences for education, is a mentor to all in the new science, mathematics and technology cluster.

“As cluster leader he is approachable and patient with both students and staff. He participates in outreach programmes such as teaching matric students to help them improve their grades in physical sciences. He is also always willing to help subject advisors and teachers, and assists and trains them to use the equipment for experiments.”

Kgomotsego says Washington is an asset to the faculty. “He is also an active member of a public lecture committee and supervises both master’s and doctoral students.”
