This project is a creative project and transdisciplinary investigation into the artist’s book and practice-based research. The duration was three years and about forty artists (writers, sculptors, graphic artists, etc) made artists’ books. These books were included in a group exhibition that was exhibited at the Stellenbosch Word Festival in 2010 and at galleries at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University and the University of Johannesburg.
According to Prof Franci Greyling of the School of Languages, artists often participate in interdisciplinary projects such as thematic group exhibitions, writing projects, podium poetry, etc. The projects are seldom conceptualised or utilised as research opportunities. “Transgressions and Boundaries of the Page” presented space for artists and researchers to deliver creative work and at the same time, to be directly or indirectly involved in research.
Greyling says that the concept of practice-based research is still in a developmental phase in South Africa and is currently debated from various perspectives such as the issue of the recognition of creative outputs as research. This interdisciplinary project was developed so that understanding of co-operative practice-based research could come, and also to empower creative individuals to formalise their practice as research.
This year is dedicated to the writing of research findings, papers, articles and congresses on the “Transgressions and Boundaries of the Page”.
A project catalogue was also released during the colloquium. Wessie van der Westhuizen (graphic design) was responsible for the design and layout of the printed catalogue. Jaco Burger designed the digital catalogue. The catalogue is available at R200 from Greyling, and it can also be ordered at franci.greyling@nwu.ac.za
