Mervyn, a former NWU-Puk, has been involved with the university as team manager of the first rugby team since 2001. In 2006 he was appointed as rugby manager where he has made a huge contribution since.
"It’s going to be a challenge,” he says about his new position as chairman of USSA Rugby. “For me the priority is going to be to make sure that rugby takes its rightful place at universities and that it becomes a bigger feeding source for SA Rugby. There are many universities that are not involved in the Varsity Cup and I believe they also have a huge role to play.
With Sevens Rugby that is to become an Olympic sport in 2016, we’ll have to look after that component of the game and see how we can expand it.”
