Nicola Smit, born on 9 July 1972 in Port Elizabeth, obtained the degrees BLC (cum laude) (UP), LLB (cum laude) (UP) and LLD (RAU, now UJ). She started out as a junior lecturer at UNISA, before moving to the then RAU (now UJ). Her teaching and research focus has always been labour law, including social protection issues related to workers. She joined the NWU Faculty of Law (Potchefstroom) as Executive Dean in 2013 but continues to supervise doctoral students, conduct research and to present a couple of guest lectures during the course of the year. She has published extensively in the areas of labour law and social security law - a list of her publications is available here. Nicola also enjoys attending and presenting at national and international conferences, a list of contributions is available here.

Her research interests include transfer of undertakings and associated issues, extending protection to vulnerable workers, including those working in the informal economy, dismissal law (or job security), decent work and selected social protection issues.
