Research: Centre of Excellence for Nutrition (CEN)

About Us 

Overview:

The Centre of Excellence for Nutrition (CEN) is located in the Faculty of Health Sciences and shares staff with the School of Physiology, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences. It is at present the only Centre of Excellence at the University and the only one for nutrition in Africa.

Core competence and research expertise:

The nutrition and dietetic staff in CEN train students for Africa in Africa. Because of this role, core competencies and expertise in all the different aspects of nutrition had to be developed. At present staff members have national and international expertise and leadership in the following areas of nutrition: ethics in nutrition research and funding, nutrition transition; micronutrient under-nutrition; nutrition and child development; overweight and obesity and lipids and cardiovascular disease.

Facilities and equipment:

In addition to the metabolic unit, several laboratories with the top of the range facilities and equipment are available to CEN, such as a food service research laboratory (metabolic kitchen).

The mission of the group, to play a leading role through excellence in training and research towards the improvement of the nutritional status of individuals, households, communities and populations is supported by their main aim to provide scientific evidence for the solutions for nutritional problems through high quality research.
