The Mafikeng Campus welcomed more than 1 600 first-year students and not even the rainy conditions could dampen the excitement. During his address, Prof Dan Kgwadi, the Mafikeng Campus Rector assured the newcomers and their parents that Management will do all in its power to ensure that learning facilities are available to students. “As Management we are committed to ensure that we make facilities available and facilitate learning for students,” he said.
On the Potchefstroom Campus the newly appointed Campus Rector, Prof Herman van Schalkwyk, welcomed approximately 4 300 first-year students. According to Prof van Schalkwyk the through-put of students is good and it will remain one of the most important strategic focuses to improve first-year through-put. “An important focus is research because it is through this that an university positions itself. Our research outputs are still increasing, which means that we can increasingly develop an own identity and niche and that we can establish ourselves all the more internationally,” he said.
The Vaal Triangle Campus also welcomed a record number of first-year students. In relation to 2009, 900 more students successfully applied to study at the Campus and according to Mr Piet van Wyk – senior marketer, more than a 1 000 first-year students went through the registration process. During his first official address as the new Campus Rector, Prof Thanyani Mariba thanked the students and their parents for trusting the University with their dreams for the future. The Rector furthermore told the students that deciding upon a future career is one of the biggest choices they will ever have to make, and that their student experience will have a lasting effect on the course of their lives.
According to Dr Theuns Eloff (Vice-Chancellor of the NWU), the NWU is currently the fourth largest university in the country by head count. The University is a well recognized player in the field of tertiary education – not only in terms of quality teaching and learning but also with regard to focused research and the implementation of expertise.

 The Vaal Triangle Campus boasts with two pairs of identical twins amongst the registered first year students. The twins, Anzette and Leana Kotze and Janine and Cheryl Hundermark will join the day residence, Acacia.
