Kgosi Mangope celebrates with Mafikeng Campus

The former Bophuthatswana President, Dr. Lucas Manyane Mangope was part of the 30 year celebrations of the campus when he was invited to present a prestige lecture.  The lecture took place during the afternoon of 8 October and was attended by approximately 400 members of the community and students.
In his speech Dr Mangope recalled that when they began in 1970 to present their dream to the people, many dismissed it as a big joke. “No one at that time could ever have thought that out of Mafikeng could emerge a distinguished home of scholars” said Mangope.  He also said that the students were the real champions of the campus and believed in the dream of studying hard to show that the campus meant business.
Dr Mangope also thanked the people that worked with him at the beginning of the campus namely Messrs D. P Kgotleng, D.P Moloto, Dr. J.M Ntsime, Mr. Pat Mokgobo, Mr Solomon Rathebe, Professors Ernest Lekhela, Bob Leshoai and John Makhene.  He also expressed his appreciation that the Mafikeng Campus is one of the three campuses of the North West University.
The prestige lecture forms part of the initiative to revive the culture of presenting lectures on campus.  During the year two inaugural lectures, a memorial lecture and a prestige lecture were conducted.
