Managing your IT Passwords

Passwords are used for the security of both staff and students and give us access to many systems and private or University's information. Research, financial and other NWU critical files are saved on network drives. Therefore your password must be protected in the same way as you would the PIN of your bank card.

We also recommend you DO NOT click this option: Remember My Password!

It is important to ensure that only authorised people log into the network. This means that both staff and students are responsible for keeping the network secure and their passwords secret, not give it to anyone else - not even to an IT staff member.

Note: Your password must conform to a minimum password standard.

You are the only person allowed to change your password.

How can you change your Network password?

IT provides applications that help you manage your password effectively. You can change your password by using one of the following methods:

	Click the following URL: Password Change / Wagwoord Verandering to change your Novell password online or;
	Take your university card and visit your Campus IT to get a new Network password.

What will happen if you change your Network password?

Both staff and students @ NWU use their network password to log into the NWU network - also to access a number of other systems and programs. If you change your network password please keep in mind that the following systems and programs will also be affected:

Staff	GroupWise; Intranet; eFundi; VSS (Varsite Student System); Share; VTC (Learning Content Management System); VPN; WiFi (Wireles\|); BBS
Students	eFundi; GoupWise; Internet; Notice Board

Staff

Please visit your Campus IT to get a new password and take your University Card along for identification. Click one of the links for detailed information of your Campus IT service desk: M, P or V.

Students

Please visit your IT Student Services to get a new password and take your University Card along for identification.

You can get a new password online at: New Password Request / Nuwe Wagwoord Versoek.

-	NB: This system use your cell phone and ID number for verification.
-	The password is randomly created by the system and can contain numeric, alpha numeric and wild card characters.
-	This password could also cause confusion when sent by SMS to your cell phone because of the resemblance between both the numeric zero: 0 and Capital letter: O and the Capital letter: I and small letter:
-	Therefore change it immediately to something else that's easier for you to remember. Click the Password Change / Wagwoord Verandering and get a new password.

I want to change my Internet password, how?

Staff members of the Institutional Office, the Potchefstroom and Vaal Triangle campus can change their Internet password online. Click the following URL: Internet Password Change.
