Deon Meyer – Ink in his veins
Deon Meyer has distinguished himself as one of South Africa’s best and most respected crime writers. He grew up in Klerksdorp, only a stone’s throw away from Potchefstroom, and completed his BA studies at the former Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education.
Fourteen years later he published his first Afrikaans novel, setting the pace for a productive career as crime novelist. He became a full-time author in 2009 and completed an honours degree in History at the University of the Free State and an MA in Creative Writing at the University of Stellenbosch.
Deon has published 11 novels and two collections of short stories. His novels have been translated into 27 languages. In 2010, he won the written and oral literature category of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) annual multilingualism awards.
He has written several feature film screenplays based on his short stories, and two series for television. He shows significant leadership in his field and sets an example as a writer by sharing his experiences with the youth and young, upcoming writers.
His international fame and recognition are quite extraordinary for a South African author. Most of his books have been optioned for movies and he is internationally known and recognised as a thriller novelist.
