IT @ NWU

Future IT changes

  Why change?

IT has been implementing a profile management system in phases for the past few years. One of the most important steps in the process is to move all users to a new environment (the so-called FP tree). There are many reasons for these changes, inter alia to enable us to assign 10 GB of disk space to each user.

   Where can I get help?

Comprehensive procedures will be made available, but if you experience any problems with the preliminary work, you can log a Call-IT and we will assist. The person in your faculty/school/department who is responsible for the printers will also be able to assist in the preliminary phase. As soon as it's your faculty/school/department's turn, we will make available a number of helpdesk consultants for a day or two.

When and how will the changes take place?

We plan to tackle the project in two phases:
Phase 1 – We will expect you to write down printer codes.
Phase 2 – A day will be selected for your faculty/school/department's turn.

We plan to start with the smaller faculties around 10 April and finish before the end of April. More information on the exact dates will be communicated at a later stage.

What will be expected of you?

  Beforehand
Get the printer codes (valid access codes) of the printers that you use and write them down. E.g. printer P-ITBL3's code is 12345. Please retain this printer name and code. Do it for each network printer that you are using.

  On the transfer date
Keep the printer codes that you have written down ready.
Log on to the new environment.
    Re-enter the printer codes.

  Please test!

Please test all the software that you're using on a regular basis, such as GroupWise, Oracle, etc.
Make sure that your network printers are working.
Make sure that you have access to your P drive.
Test the GroupWise archive.

  Procedures will be available soon
