The Language diversity of South Africa provides a rich backdrop to the research focus of this unit which comprises three main areas of expertise. The Research Unit is primarily involved in supporting postgraduate studies (at MA and PhD levels) as well as research projects of staff members within the School of Languages.
The Unit stems from a Focus Area Communication in South Africa: language, literature and media which was established in 1998 and it acquired Unit status under the current name in 2003.
The first director was Prof DP Wissing (1998-2001) with Prof AM de Lange who succeeded him as director and officiated for the period 2002-2007. Prof HM Viljoen then took over as director for the period 2008-2010 and was in turn succeeded by Prof JC Roux in 2011. Since 2015 Prof AM de Lange has been director again.
