Financial Mathematics grabs the attention of Staff and Students at Mafikeng Campus
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, recently conducted a one-day workshop on Stochastic Ordinary Differential Equations. Professor Gazanfer Unal from Yeditepe University in Turkey was the speaker for the day.
The purpose of the workshop was to enlighten students and staff members about Financial Mathematics and its importance in today’s world. About twenty delegates attended the workshop.
As a Professor in the Department of Banking and Finance and Department of Mathematics, Prof. Unal said that studying Financial Mathematics would also provide easy job access at the banks and financial institutions.
The Mathematical Sciences Department’s professor, Masood Khalique sees the workshop as one of the positive additions to both students and staff and said that there is a great interest amongst our students for studying Financial Mathematics. He also said that his department intends to introduce Financial Mathematics as part of Applied Mathematics in the near future.
During Prof. Unal’s visit, a joint paper with Prof. Khalique was prepared and presented at the Euler Tercentenary Workshop held at the University of Witwatersrand on 3- 4 August 2007.
Prof. Khalique also thanked Prof. Michael McPherson, Dean of FAST, for encouraging and supporting the research in the faculty.
