Jackson State University Professor visits IISAMM
MAFIKENG - A renowned mathematician, Professor Celestin Wafo Soh, recently visited the International Institute for Symmetry Analysis and Mathematical Modelling (IISAMM) of North-West University, Mafikeng Campus.
Professor Wafo Soh is currently a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics, at Jackson State University, Mississippi, in USA. Born in Cameroon, he came to South Africa for higher education and did his MSc and Ph D degrees in Applied Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand. After working for four years at the same university he left for the USA. He has published over fourty research articles in high profile peer review journals and has presented his research work at various national and international conferences. He reviews for several international journals.
At present, his research interests are in Symmetry Analysis of Deterministic and Stochastic differential equations, Mesh-free numerical methods and Mathematical Modelling.
During his visit a joint paper with Professor Masood Khalique of the Mafikeng Campus entitled “Approximate Symmetry and Solutions of the Hyperbolic Heat Equation” was completed and is due for submission. Several other research projects are underway. He also conducted for seminar to staff and students entitled “Euler-Bernoulli beams from a symmetry standpoint characterization of equivalent equations”.
“It was a great pleasure for me to come back to South Africa and visit a South African university and collaborate in research with staff and students,” said Prof Wafo Soh. He further said that he had discussions with Prof Khalique to strengthen the collaboration in the field of Group Analysis and Mathematical Modelling and plan the exchange of staff/research students in these fields.
Prof Khalique thanked Prof Michael McPherson, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Science and Technology for his continued support with regards to research related matters.
