Positive feedback on Drive Safe project during Intervarsity 2011

Positive commentary was received for this year’s Drive Safe project held by the North-West University’s Healthcare Centre near Wesselsbron.
This year’s project, as in previous years, was to make sure that the students from Kovsies arrive safely in Potchefstroom for the annual Intervarsity between the NWU and Kovsies.

Ms Lenie Kotzé of the Healthcare Centre of the NWU with Mr Attie Mokhlahlane and Ms Neo Sephoti of SAB’s head office in Bloemfontein. SAB was one of the big sponsors of the project.

There was a festive atmosphere at the halfway stop at Wesselsbron.

Volunteers helped Vodacom with the testing of drivers during the Drive Safe project at Wesselsbron.

The project leader, Ms Lenie Kotzé, says no accidents were reported on the route between Bloemfontein and Potchefstroom and none in the city itself. She says nearly 200 vehicles stopped at the halfway stop at Wesselsbron and between 500 and 600 students took the voluntary alcohol limit test. “Everybody that we tested was sober. Only three drivers tested more than 0,0 (but less than 0,5), and after they spent some time at the halfway stop, they were allowed to continue on their journey.”
She says the students were very positive about the awareness campaign against drunken driving and a very good spirit prevailed. There was also excellent cooperation with the police and the traffic authorities.
In Potchefstroom, more than 500 students made use of the Buddy system to get to and from their homes safely.
Kotzé says she is very happy with the project, especially since no accidents were reported.
