Inspiring lecturers win R50 000 each

Institutional Office – Fifteen lecturers of the North-West University (NWU) were recently rewarded after being chosen as the most inspiring lecturers for 2012.

It is a well-known fact that you can only inspire others to develop their own potential when you yourself are passionate and motivated.  Thanks to their passion and motivation, these NWU lecturers recently won the Rapport Top Lecturer Award to the value of R50 000 each.  The prize money was presented to the winning lecturers at a gala event in Potchefstroom on 13 November 2012.

North-West University (NWU) rewards outstanding researchers

Institutional Office – Commitment is rewarded – that much was clear when more than fifty NWU staff members were acknowledged for excellence in research, innovation, community involvement and creativity at a gala event in Potchefstroom on Friday, 26 October 2012.

North-West University (NWU) honours spokespersons

Institutional Office – During a recent function, academics, researchers and other staff members were acknowledged for their contribution in enhancing the media profile of the NWU.  The university is a wonderful source of expertise and is home to various experts with an extensive knowledge in various fields, and these experts are encouraged to, through the media, share their insights with the public.

Resulting from the report released on the independent investigation into the tragic drowning of Thabang Makhoang, an enquiry was received from the City Press.  Herewith the questions from the City press and accompanying answers from the North-West University:

1. Is the university content with the finding that Thabang's drowning was a "freak accident", given the fact that there are material differences in statements, a lack of cross-examination and the unavailability of evidence from state witnesses?

Outcome: Independent investigation into the drowning of Thabang Makhoang at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University

Institutional Office – The report of the independent investigation conducted by Advocates Lourens de Koning (SC) and Vusi Pikoli into the tragic death of a first-year student on 21 January 2012 at the Potchefstroom Campus was finalised and presented to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Theuns Eloff, on 15 March 2012. During a meeting of the Council Executive on 20 March, a decision was taken that the report be tabled at an extraordinary Council meeting on 30 March.

After deliberation, the report as well as the recommendations were accepted by Council. Council also expressed their appreciation for the comprehensive nature of the investigation and the resulting report. The terms of reference of the committee conducting the independent investigation were as follows:

National Press Club – North-West University Journalist of the Year awarded

Barry Bateman of Eyewitness News is the National Press Club – North-West University Journalist of the Year for 2011.  

Bateman was awarded for his perseverance, notion for factually correct reporting and for working under tremendous deadline pressure.  His tenacity with the story on the Tshwane Metro Police used of vehicles with false number plates is a prime example of excellence in journalism.

The awards were made at the National Press Club - Aon South Africa Newsmaker of the Year awards in Pretoria tonight.  
 
Thabiso Thakali of the Saturday Star is the print news category journalist of the year for his portfolio of outstanding journalism.

North-West University (NWU) Council statement with reference to the tragic drowning of Thabang Makhoang

Institutional Office – During an extraordinary meeting of the Council of the NWU held on 8 February 2012 at the Indaba Hotel in Johannesburg, Council expressed its sincerest condolences with the next of kin following the tragic death of Thabang Makhoang.

Although this incident is considered an unfortunate tragedy, it was stressed that the drowning occurred during a social event for first years only and not as part of an initiation practice.  Council emphasised that any form of initiation or initiation practices at any of the NWU’s three campuses are strictly forbidden. The policy of the NWU in this regard is emphatically stressed and is known to all students and staff.  Should malpractices occur, Council has pledged its support to management in acting decisively against transgressors.

Reaction to reports on the ministerial investigation with reference to the drowning of Thabang Makhoang at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus

Institutional Office - The NWU again emphasises that any form of initiation or initiation practices at any of its three campuses are strictly forbidden. This policy is emphatically stressed and is known to all students and staff.

It is the aim of the NWU that the activities of all students must adhere to the terms, values and policies of the university.

Should malpractices occur, the university has firm procedures in place to address them and to act accordingly.
