Lecturer appointed as regional support expert on HEAIDS project

VANDERBIJLPARK – Prof Linda Theron, a lecturer from the School for Educational Sciences on the Vaal Triangle Campus of North-West University (NWU), has been invited to serve as a regional support expert on the HEAIDS project of Higher Education South Africa (HESA): “Piloting of HIV modules in Teacher Education Facilities in the higher education institutions in South Africa”.

The project, which runs until May 2009, includes encouraging and supporting higher education institutions to effectively equip educators-in-training to cope with the many challenges of the HIV/Aids pandemic.

In addition to the HEAIDS project, Prof Theron’s National Research Foundation (NRF)-supported project, “Resilient Educators” (REds), will be implemented among Life Orientation educators in Gauteng, the Free State, Mpumalanga and North-West provinces in the course of 2008. Prof Herman Strydom, NWU, Prof Rina Delport, University of Pretoria (UP), Dr Stephan Geyer, UP and Mrs Steffie Esterhuizen, NWU, will collaborate in this implementation.

The initial research results of REds suggest that participating educators are empowered to cope with the multiple burdens associated with the HIV/Aids pandemic.

Life Orientation educators who wish to participate are welcome to contact Prof Theron at (016) 910 3076 / 910 3082 or e-mail at Linda.Theron@nwu.ac.za.
