NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (NWU) HUMAN RIGHTS DAY CELEBRATIONS

Institutional Office - The North-West University celebrated the 2011 Human Rights Day by collaborating with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in organising a workshop with the theme “Race in South Africa since 1994”.

The event was held on 18 March 2011 at the Institutional Office in Potchefstroom.

Keynote speakers explored different facets of the theme.  Ms Lucy Holborn from the South African Institute for Race Relations (SAIRR) talked on The Long Shadow of Apartheid: Race in South Africa since 1994, while Dr Kgamadi Kometsi from the SAHRC presented a piece on Fighting racism and related intolerance: The National Action Plan and South Africa.  Prof Melvin Mbao, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Mafikeng Campus also gave some personal reflections on Equality under the Constitution, after which the floor was opened for questions and discussions on the key subjects.

Delegates from the whole NWU community, namely the Mafikeng, Potchefstroom, and Vaal Triangle Campuses as well as the Institutional Office attended the event. To create a more diverse group, delegates from state departments as well as different stakeholders from the broader community were also invited.
