Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for International Students




The Swedish Institute provides scholarships in Sweden to highly-qualified international students from developing countries who want to study at Swedish Universities.


Scholarships are intended for studies in Sweden starting in the fall semester (August) and focus mainly on the master’s level. A few scholarships will be awarded for studies at a bachelor’s level.


Fields of study


About 600 different study programmes at Swedish universities are eligible for a scholarship. The programmes have been selected by the Swedish universities and cover a wide variety of study areas. Number of Scholarships


For the academic year of 2013/2014 about 140 scholarships will be offered. According to the instructions of the Swedish Government, no country can exceed 25% of the granted scholarships.


Eligibility Requirements


The programme is open to candidates from two different categories of countries.


Category 1:


Candidates with citizenship from the following countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.


Category 2:


Candidates with citizenship from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients can apply to this programme. Priority will be given to candidates from Algeria, Botswana, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Syria, Tunisia, Vietnam, West Bank and Gaza strip and Yemen.


NB: Candidates with citizenship from the following countries, Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine cannot apply to this programme.


In this regard, citizens from Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine can apply within the Visby Programme.


Citizens from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia can apply within the programme SI Scholarships for East Europe.


Citizens from Turkey can apply within the Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Programme.




The scholarships are intended for students from the above-mentioned target groups for full time studies in Sweden. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.


NB: However, scholarships cannot be granted for students who:


  • Have already lived in Sweden for two years or more previous to the scholarship period.
  • Have a Swedish permanent residence or work permit.
  • Have previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for studies at master’s level or for research at a Swedish university.
  • Already hold a master’s degree from a Swedish university/university college.
  • Are currently enrolled in a study programme on bachelor’s or master’s level at a Swedish university or university college.


Value of the Award


The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 9,000 per month.  Scholarship holders will also receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 15,000.  Scholarship holders will be insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.


Application Information


First apply for studies at a Swedish University.


Prior to applying for a scholarship, you must apply for a study programme at the Swedish official Online Application Service for University Admissions.


The deadline for applications is normally mid- January. You can apply for a maximum of four study programmes.


Submit the payment of your application fee to University Admissions before 1 February, and then apply for a scholarship.


The scholarship application period normally falls within the first two weeks of the month of February preceding the Swedish academic year*.


* The academic year (Sweden) is divided into two semesters – autumn semester from late August to mid January, and spring semester from mid January to June.
