1. Background

 

Franz Werfel, born in 1890 in Prague and died in 1945 in California. He was one of the foremost representatives of Austrian literature.

 

Therefore, the Franz Werfel Grant is aimed at young university lecturers dealing mainly with Austrian literature. Initiated in 1992, this fellowship programme is open to candidates from around the world.

3. Eligibility Requirements

 

A Werfel grant holder can work as a visiting researcher in a university department or carry out specialist studies in a library, archive or other research institution. It is not just a scholarship in terms of material support for up to 18 months, but by the inclusion of a range of follow-up measures, ensures longer term sustainability.

Follow-up measures include:

 

  • Annual invitation to a relevant professional symposium
  • One-month research grant every three years
  • Postdoctoral fellowship
  • Habilitation grant
  • Publication grant

4. Value of the Award

 

  1. Monthly grant rate:

 

  • grant: € 1040
  • book allowance: € 93

 

  1. Accident and health insurance, accommodation:


If necessary, the Österreichische Austauschdienst-Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung (Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research) (OeAD-GmbH) will take out an accident and health insurance on behalf of the grant recipient.

 

The OeAD-GmbH will endeavour to provide accommodation (student hall of residence or flat) for grant holders who wish to have their accommodation arranged by the OeAD. Monthly costs: € 220 to € 470 (depending on how much comfort the grant holder requires). An administration fee of €18 per month is payable to the OeAD-GmbH for arranging accommodation.

 

NB: The costs for insurance and accommodation have to be paid out of the grant by the recipient of the grant.


 

  1. Grant holders are exempted from paying tuition fees.
