Super Chritical Fluid Extraction Lab
This state-of-the-art pilot plant and laboratory is a first of its kind in Africa, and was opened by the NWU and the dti. With the use of supercritical carbon dioxide, CO2, as solvent, essential oils, flavourings and colourings (used in the cosmetic, food and medicinal extract industry) can safely be extracted – and it is environmentally friendly at that.
The Green Factor: The compounds are extracted without thermal damage or adding harmful chemicals, due to the relatively low temperatures involved and the fact that CO2 is used as the solvent.
