Dean's message | Faculty of Law

Message from the Dean

The Faculty of Law, North-West University welcomes students, visitors, academics and practitioners at the Potchefstroom Campus. We strive to be the gathering place of choice for diverse, interesting and dynamic people with an interest in Law. The Faculty has a long and proud history in South Africa (the Faculty was established in 1965) and maintains good co-operation and relationships with faculties abroad as well as with other South African faculties. Through relevant research and focused postgraduate studies it is possible to leave a footprint both nationally and internationally. The global environment that we find ourselves in today after all entails that students and academics, with the help of technology, can and must remain up to date with regional and international developments.

During the course of 2017 effect will be given to the new strategy of the NWU through implementing across-campus faculties. In future we will refer to Law@NWU, which will include all law programmes and staff on the three NWU campuses. The Faculty’s calendar/year book indicates which programmes are offered on which campus(es).

The Faculty views our mission to train people to enter the legal profession as well as other careers in a serious light. Our mission makes it clear that we want to provide a service to the legal community and to society, inter alia by providing excellent teaching to our students.

The Faculty of Law does not only want to train good and successful lawyers, we also want to produce lawyers with the right values. The legal profession is one of the oldest professions and requires complete honesty, reliability and integrity from its members. Our goal is therefore not only to prepare students for the profession but also to equip students with varied skills and the required knowledge for our constitutional values to be discernible not only in their professional but also their run-of-the-mill lives.

All of this is happening in and around the old Main Building here on campus – you are most welcome to come and spend some time with us in this beautiful and stimulating environment.

The Dean: Prof Nicola Smit

We should not be so taken up in the search for truth, as to neglect the needful duties of active life; for it is only action that gives a true value and commendation to virtue.

Come and see what we are working on. About us
