Short Learning Programmes

 

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMMES IN MEDIATION

Any member of the public may enrol for any of these courses, should they comply with the admission criteria for the specific programme. Both programmes have been approved by the NWU Institutional Committee on Academic Standards. They comply with the prescribed 40 hour formal training and standards set by the court annexed mediation rules as one of the requirements for registration as a mediator.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON PRACTICAL MEDIATION

  • 40 hours of training – Monday to Friday.
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 4 proposed credits.
  • Assessment during practical role plays and simulations.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent) plus a minimum of 5 years post-matric working experience.
  • Course fee of R10 000 plus VAT includes text book, study material, basic stationery, training, assessment, certificate, 5 lunches, 10 teas.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON CIVIL MEDIATION

  • 40 hours of training – Monday to Friday - PLUS submission of assignments and a portfolio.
  • Proposed NQF level 8, 12 proposed credits.
  • Assessment during practical role plays and simulations and on written tests and assignments.
  • The minimum admission requirement is a three year bachelor degree (or equivalent) plus a minimum of 5 years post-matric working experience.
  • Course fee of R12 500 plus VAT includes text book, study material, basic stationery, training, assessment, certificate, 5 lunches, 10 teas.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMMES IN CUSTOMS AND EXCISE

These programmes have been approved by the NWU Institutional Committee on Academic Standards and are offered to institutions and companies that require in-house staff training. We will gladly supply you with a quotation.

Due to the introduction of the Authorised Economic Operator Concept of the WCO adopted by SARS which has been introduced as the “Preferred Trader” programme, the target group is SARS customs officials, state entities involved in global supply chain procurement, state-owned enterprises involved in global supply chain procurement, freight forwarders and logistics operators, customs brokers and consultants, importers and exporters.

CUSTOMS AND EXCISE GLOBAL OPERATIONAL PRACTITIONER

  • 32 hours of training, spread according to your requirements.
  • Proposed level of presentation NQF level 8, 6 proposed credits.
  • Assessment during practical simulations, case studies and assignments.
  •  Students enrolling for the course must comply with at least one of the following:-

1. Grade 12 with proof that they are professionally, vocationally employed in the field of Customs Regulations or Customs Compliance with at least 3 years experience;

2. Grade 12 with a relevant Certificate or Diploma such as a FIATA Diploma which is recognised in the Freight Forwarding Industry, or a TETA Qualification, or a Certificate in Freight Forwarding and Customs Compliance.

3. A certificate equivalent to the above including full membership of a recognised professional body in Taxation, Customs & Excise, SAAFF and/or Shipping.

4. A three year degree with at least one year practical experience in the field of customs and excise.

  • Course fee includes study material, basic stationery, training, assessment, and certificate.

CUSTOMS AND EXCISE GLOBAL STRATEGIC PRACTITIONER

  • 32 hours of training, spread according to your requirements.
  • Proposed level of presentation NQF level 8, 6 proposed credits.
  • Assessment during practical simulations, case studies and assignments.
  • The minimum admission requirement: successful completion of the short learning programme: Customs And Excise Global Operational Practitioner
  • Course fee includes study material, basic stationery, training, assessment, and certificate.

 

 

PRACTICAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

The Law Clinic offers a variety of Short Learning Programmes aimed at developing practical skills needed in the legal profession.

All these ourses have been approved by the NWU Institutional Committee on Academic Standards.  The courses are offered to legal practitioners, candidate legal practitioners, social or welfare workers, paralegals and students.

INTRODUCTORY SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME FOR PARALEGALS (PHASE 1)

  • 24 hours of training.
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • 8 hours to complete an assignment – pass rate 50%
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Management, Administration of Estates, Socio-Economic Rights of HIV-infected Women and Children, Social Assistance Act 13 of 2004, Rights of Children in terms of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, Consumer Related Matters, Consultation Skills, Civil Proceedings, Prescription, Divorce Matters, Maintenance Matters, Domestic Violence Matters, Ethics and Constitutional Law and Human Rights.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

ADVANCED SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME FOR PARALEGALS (PHASE 2)

  • 24 hours of training.
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • 8 hours to complete an assignment – pass rate 50%
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Customary Marriages, Intestate Succession, Labour Related Matters (Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998, Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995, Dispute Resolution), Consumer Related Matters, Land Matters (Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act 19 of 1998, Extension of Security of Tenure Act 62 of 1997, Rental Housing Act 50 of 1999).
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON THE CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT FOR PARALEGALS

  • 1 day training course
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Consumer protection under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON THE LAW OF CONTRACT FOR PARALEGALS

  • 1 day training course
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Law of Contract
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON THE CHILDREN’S ACT FOR PARALEGALS

  • 1 day training course
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • Short Learning Programme content:  The Children’s Act 38 of 2005.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION FOR PARALEGALS

  • 1 day training course
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Alternative Dispute Resolution.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON BASIC LEGAL TRAINING FOR ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF

  • 24 hours of training.
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • 8 hours to complete an assignment – a portfolio of evidence must be submitted.
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Administration, Pre-litigation Process, Litigation Process, Action Procedure, Application Procedure, Forms and Precedents.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON MEDIATION SKILLS FOR PARALEGALS

  • 3 day training course
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Practical Mediation Skills.
  • Assessment during practical role plays and simulations.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON LABOUR LAW FOR ATTORNEYS

  • 2 day training course
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Unfair Labour Practice, Automatically Unfair Dismissal, Unfair Dismissal, Procedure and Remedies.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Course fee includes the learning material, basic stationery, training, assessment and a certificate.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME ON THE CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT FOR ATTORNEYS

  • 2 day training course
  • Proposed NQF level 5, 0 proposed credits.
  • Short Learning Programme content:  Consumer Protection under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
  • The minimum admission requirement is Grade 12 (or equivalent).
