The Dean's Welcome

Students, parents, and colleague visitors to the Faculty webpage. Welcome! The Faculty is committed to providing a high quality and exciting professional education that responds to our context both nationally and globally. The Faculty engages in teaching, research and community involvement and through these activities aims to meet the intellectual and skills needs of the education and training sector in Southern Africa, both in terms of the diversity of education contexts in South Africa, and in terms of a quality education.

We strive to play a pivotal role in promoting a dynamic intellectual culture in the education sector, characterized by, for example, the use and application of the latest technology and teaching principles, the development and support of lifelong learners, and the cultivation and transfer of new knowledge in the context of education in southern Africa.

Robert John Balfour is Professor and, since 2011, also Dean of Education Sciences at North- West University (Potchefstroom Campus) and Honorary Professor of Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Prior to coming to NWU, he was Registrar at St Augustine College of South Africa and has held fellowships at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (London), Clare Hall (Cambridge), and in 2014 at the IoE (UCL, London).

Balfour has taught courses in Literary and Applied Language Studies. His latest literary book publication "Culture, Capital and Representation" was released by Palgrave in 2010 to critical acclaim, and his most recent education book "Education in a New South Africa: crisis and change" was published by Cambridge University Press in 2015. He holds degrees from the University of Rhodes, Natal, and Cambridge respectively, and is a published creative writer, poet, and also an exhibited painter (most recent solo exhibition in October 2015 at ArtSpace in Durban).
