School of Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport Science:

The Biokinetics Programme has a fully equipped and specialised exercise facility to offer a community-based and -focused exercise and rehabilitation service.

The Sport Science Programme and the Institute for Sport Science and Sport Development are situated in the FNB High Performance Institute of the University. It has a fully equipped sport science-testing laboratory.

The Kinderkinetics programme and PRETLAND activities have specialised equipment for education/training and research in the development of young children involved in various forms of motor development and physical activity.

The anthropometry laboratory has specialised equipment (e.g. the BODPOD) used for measuring body dimensions and service for all the other specialisation programs and the The Niche Area: Physical Activity Sport and Recreation, has its own facilities and equipment specialised in outdoor work in adventure education and training.

School of Pharmacy

Centre of Excellence for Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmacen) is exceptionally well-equipped with the latest technologies to study the solid-state properties of materials (e.g. XRPD, IR and DSC) and also has access to modern facilities such as several fully equipped research laboratories, an analytical technology laboratory, a laboratory for handling radioactive substances, a modern animal research centre, electron microscopy unit, cell culture laboratory, bio-analytical centre and a centre for electron microscopy studies. Analyses include HPLC assays, GC assays, GC-MS and LC-MS-MS.

The Research Institute For Industrial Pharmacy (RIIP) incorporating the Centre For The Quality Assurance Of Medicines (CENQAM) has an impressive array of state of the art equipment such as HPLC’s, GC’s, UV/VIS- and IR-spectrophotometers, disintegration and dissolution apparatus, as well as access to a Mass Spectrometer (MS), Micromass AutoSpec-Tof (EI, FAB, CI and electrospray), LC-MS and MS-MS, GC-MS, NMR facilities (300 MHz), a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM and TEM), and Single X-Ray Crystallography.

School of Physiology, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences

The Physiology group has access to the metabolic unit, laboratories for biochemical and DNA analyses and sophisticated apparatus for the measurement of cardiovascular parameters and vascular functions.

Several laboratories with top of the range facilities and equipment are available to the Nutrition group, such as a foodservice research laboratory (kitchen), a homeostasis laboratory, a nutrigenomics laboratory and a nutrition research laboratory.

HART (The Hypertension in Africa Research Team) has an impressive range of state of the art equipment, which makes the group unique with regard to cardiovascular research in the South African environment. The equipment include two Finometer devices (for monitoring continuous blood pressure); ten Cardiotens ambulatory BP and 24 hour ECG devices (for measuring 24 hour blood pressure and ECG); a MicroMaxx SonoSite portable ultrasound device (for measuring carotid intima media thickness and subcutaneous and visceral fat); and a Complior SP apparatus (for measuring pulse wave velocity – the golden standard measure of arterial stiffness).
