Engineering student walks away with winning prize
Potchefstroom - A Nuclear Engineering student of North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus recently walked away with the first place at an international congress in Cape Town.
Yvotte Botes did the best poster presentation in his section at the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC). The presentation covered his Master’s degree project, Techno-economic Analysis of the 100MWe Potchefstroom Experimental Pebblebed Reactor Plant.
Yvotte Brits
The conclusion drawn regarding this research is that the 10MWe high-temperature nuclear plant can therefore be erected profitably in several countries.
The plant takes up about one half of a soccer field and can be constructed near cities and towns which will eliminate the expensive costs of transmission lines and add value to the stability of electricity and the reduction of the greenhouse effect in a country.
Brits completed his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering under the supervision of Prof Eben Mulder at the Postgraduate School of Nuclear Science and Engineering. He also thanked him for his wisdom, guidance and motivation during his project.
