Vision
To establish nationally and internationally relevant and innovative Student Counselling Services with a view to the optimal psychological and intellectual development of students.

Mission
The aim of Student Counselling Services (SCS) is to establish relevant cost-effective guidance, development and consultation services in accordance with the mission of the University. SCS’s focus is facilitating the development of an individual and the student community with a view to achieving successful graduation. As the emphasis is on the complete moulding of the student, our goal is to equip him or her to handle the demands of the employment market and adult community life responsibly, maturely and as a fully-developed individual.

Objectives
More specific objectives of SCS are to:

  • Help prospective and registered students to make responsible career and study course choices in a scientific manner;

  • select students based on cognitive and non-cognitive variables for different fields of study;

  • evaluate students who do not comply with the set admission requirements, based on a special admission test with a view to admission to the University;

  • identify potential problems students may have, based on psychometric results and perform therapeutic interventions where necessary and/or refer students to the appropriate academic support services;

  • psychotherapeutically handle psychological problems that have a negative effect on the academic progress of students, so that such students can function effectively;

  • present workshops on study and life skills with a view to the optimal development of the student and successful adjustment to the academic environment;

  • support students with disabilities, within the limitations of the University’s current policy, in an attempt to help them participate optimally in the University’s educational opportunities;

  • promote the sustainable, professional development of staff; and

  • as an accredited unit, provide professional training for intern psychologists and psychometrists.
