STUDENT COUNSELING SERVICE

Career and course counseling

Nowadays many adolescents enter the world of study and the professional world with inadequate knowledge of the professional world and the work situation. The scaling down of vocational guidance in schools and the increase in the unemployment figure place ever-increasing pressure on career services at educational institutions to render effective vocational guidance services from as early as grade 9.

Student Counseling Services is the official department of the North-West University that uses psychometric tests to help school pupils from grades 9 to 12 to make responsible career and study course choices in a scientific manner. Based on a prospective student’s aptitude, interest, personality, study habits and attitudes, SCS can help such student to take realistic and responsible decisions in this regard. The service is also rendered to all registered students AT NO COST and includes the following:

*Career guidance
*Career choices
*Assistance with the realisation and optimisation of potential
*Assistance with referral of emotional and physical issues
*Assistance to study more successfully
*Assistance with and referral of study problems
*Screening of students in specific fields, among others chemistry, theology, city and regional planning, dietetics, the nursing sciences, biokinetics, sport sciences, kinderkinetics, law, consumer sciences and BEd courses
*Special entrance examination

Testing at schools
Group testing at schools can also be arranged.

In addition, the psychologists have close contact with other universities, technikons, technical and other private colleges and can therefore make meaningful recommendations regarding fields of study at such institutions.
