PUK ARTS

About us

PUK Arts is accommodated in the beautiful Heimat Building, the oldest building on campus and also a National Historic Monument. Our general objective is to promote a sound artistic life on campus. This entails mainly, but not exclusively, non-academic aspects of the arts. PUK Arts also acts as  a  partner in projects of  the Arts Council of the Student Council. It is furthermore the home of the so-called “concert groups” –  student associations that are affiliated with the Student Council and  that focus on the performing arts.

Our interests are briefly  the following:

  • PUK Arts acts as guardian of the performing arts student associations, such as for instance the orchestras, choirs, dance, drama and other groups.

  • As fellow organiser of certain of the students’ art activities such as the Campus Talent Festival and First-year concerts, PUK Arts demonstrates the close cooperation with the Arts Council of the Student Council.

  • Physical facilities for art activities like  theatres, art exhibition spaces, halls and related rooms, are managed by PUK Arts.

  • The modern recording studio in the Heimat building is an exceptional facility, delivering a complete recording, editing and graphic service.

  • Two camping sites of the NWU-PUK, namely Nooitgedacht and College-Oord.  These are different kinds of grounds, but they basically house groups that have rehaearsal camps, training camps and the like, as well as conferences, symposia, etc.
  • An important part of PUK Arts is the visual arts. Two galleries present art exhibitions of high quality and varied nature. The permanent collection of the NWU-PUK is also kept, managed and curated here.

  • The formal educational  activities are managed by the Institute for Arts Management and Development: Artéma. This institute manages a variety of courses and also manages the recording studio and Alabama Production House.

  • Projects of various types are also the business of PUK Arts. These entail, inter alia, the presentation of local and international productions as well as own in-house productions. Concert tours of PUK groups are organised both domestically and abroad and tour groups from abroad are accommodated and their productions presented locally.

  • PUK Arts is involved in exploring our students’ talents in a variety of ways and creating opportunities for them to develop their talents.

  • Students who do their bit at school and at university with regard to the arts are rewarded with  bursaries.

  • PUK Arts is naturally involved in numerous aspects of the Aardklop National Arts Festival: PUK productions, venues, technicians, et cetera.

  • Apart from our students who practise the arts, PUK Arts also campaign for the development of audiences: our students, staff, as well as the community at large.
