Optentia welcomes two extra-ordinary professors

The Optentia Research Programme recently welcomed two extra-ordinary professors in their midst and by doing so further enhanced their standing as a research entity of note on the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University.  The two extra-ordinary professors, Prof Sesh Paruk and Prof Hans de Witte, each delivered a prestige lecture to students (both undergraduate and postgraduate), members of the research community as well as campus management as a gesture of acceptance.

Students read their residences to victory

According to the World Literacy Foundation (WLF) illiteracy has major social and economic consequences on a person’s life. The inability to read can be directly linked to poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, and crime and it is furthermore estimated that 796 million people in the world are illiterate, whilst many more struggle to read to a satisfactory level.

Alumnus shares his view on SA’s budget speech

The global economy can be seen as the flipside of a coin – with the one half represented by the developed markets and the other by the emerging markets. The problem that is currently facing the advanced economies – especially in Europe, can be contributed to a so-called “balance sheet problem” according to Mr Ettienne le Roux, Chief Economist at Rand Merchant Bank.  This, together with factors such as restricted fiscal policies, elevated government spending and low tax rates gave way to Europe’s low Gross Domestic Product (GDP) average of 0.5% for the 2012/2013 financial year.

Polish students call NWU Vaal home

For Karolina Drejerska and Anna Jasiak the saying -home is where the heart is, does not seem to ring true. Although they pledge their allegiance to their country of birth, Poland, they have fallen head over heals in love with the picturesque Vaal Triangle Campus and already feel at home on the banks of the Vaal River. The 22 year old duo is currently pursuing their BA Honours degrees in Linguistics in the School of Languages within the Faculty of Humanities. “We were immediately filled with excitement when our Linguistic Department’s supervisor, Prof Bertus van Rooy approached us with the prospect of studying at the Southern tip of Africa,” said Karolina.

Campus bleeds for a good cause

Staff and students of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University recently took time of from their busy schedules to take part in a blood drive hosted by the South African Blood Services (SANBS).

According to SANBS spokesperson, Ms Melissa Baqwa, each unit of blood donated can save the lives of three people.  One unit of blood amounts to 475 ml.

Intercampus Sport Day – a winning initiative

The Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal) Campus recently played host the University’s Intercampus Sports Day for students.  Sports teams from all three NWU Campuses – Mafikeng, Potchefstroom and Vaal Campus came together to display good team spirit in a variety of sporting codes such as netball, soccer, rugby, chess and hockey.

Blood, sweat and tears for hockey ladies

The NWU Vaal women hockey team’s first friendly match of the season did not go as planned as they lost by 8-0 to NWU Pukke - their older university sibling. The outcome of this match will definitely serve as motivation for the team to improve during the season.  NWU Pukke had already started their season by competing in the competitive Pretoria League, which includes other heavyweights such as Tuks and TUT.

An internationally acclaimed approach in idea to business concept development (known as Code06) was recently taught to lecturers of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal). The guest lecturer was Mr Martijn Huis from Groningen in Holland, who is also the course developer and owner of the Code06 program.

Academic achievers home at the Vaal Triangle Campus

The senior management of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University recently celebrated the achievements of first year students who passed the 2011 national senior certificate examination with four or more distinctions.  This annual event provides an informal platform from which management can interact with the new students and motivate them to persistently continue on their journey of academic achievement.

During the event the Campus Rector, Prof Thanyani Mariba congratulated the students on their choice to study at the North-West University and invited them to embrace all
opportunities that will come their way and henceforth enjoy an unmatched student experience.
