Swimming SA want to invest in Puk

Due to the Campus’ superb sport facilities, Swimming South Africa has identified North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus as a strategic partner to help promote swimming as a professional sport in the province, as well as nationally.

A delegation of Swimming SA recently did exploratory work on the Puk Campus. Here are Dr. Theuns Eloff (Vice-Chancellor of NWU), Alan Fritz (Deputy-President of Swimming SA), Jace Naidoo (President of Swimming SA), Prof. Herman van Schalkwyk (Campus Rector) and Shaun Adriaanse (Executive Chief of Swimming SA).

According to Swimming South Africa’s President, Jace Naidoo, their request is that NWU Pukke integrates with their long-term output-driven strategic plan. “In the context of the mandate the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has given us, we wish to bring about high professional performances in 2010, 2016 and 2020 and see NWU Puk as a strategic partner to realise the objectives,” he says.
For this purpose, Swimming South Africa envisages establishing, in collaboration with NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus, a high performance swimming centre on the Campus.  Delegates recently stayed over in the Puk Sports Village one night to get a feeling of the place. That night they socialised with Dr. Theuns Eloff, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Herman van Schalkwyk, Puk Campus Rector, and James Stoffberg, Director Puksport, and had explorative talks on a possible collaborative agreement.
Swimming SA has, in principle, decided to close a collaborative agreement with NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus and that Stoffberg will draw up a strategic plan of action for upgrading an existing swimming pool.
This report will also make provision for the integration with existing facilities on Campus, the operation of a high-performance swimming centre and a budget and sources of financing to operate such a project. The plan of action will be submitted to NWU and Swimming SA for further discussion and implementation.
