South Africa must reap the benefits of Halal tourism

According to Prof Melville Saayman, director of the focus area Tourism Research in Economic Environs and Society (TREES) at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU), halal tourism is a potential gold mine for South Africa.

According to statistics there are 1,8 billion Muslims in the world who, in 2011, spent $126 billion on tourism – 12,3% of the world’s total outbound tourism expenditure. In domestic currency terms that is approximately R 1 260 billion.

South Africa is further advancing its strategy of developing commercial activities in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies with the recent launch of the Hydrogen South African (HySA) Infrastructure Centre of Competence (CoC) on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU).

NWU advances hydrogen strategy with launch of new research centre

South Africa is further advancing its strategy of developing commercial activities in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies with the recent launch of the Hydrogen South African (HySA) Infrastructure Centre of Competence (CoC) on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU).

The HySA Infrastructure CoC is co-hosted by the NWU and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and is mandated to deliver technologies for renewable hydrogen production, storage and distribution.

Power outage in Potchefstroom

The power outage in the entire Potchefstroom is due to a defective municipal transformer. The university’s own emergency electricity supply could not immediately operate effectively, due to the high load.

As a result some students could not complete their exams in the 09:00 – 12:00 session on 10 June. The management of the Potchefstroom Campus has therefore decided to instate the following rules:
