Community Law Centre

This specialised unit is principally responsible for our community service and out-reach programme.

Through our Clinical Legal Education Programme, the Centre provides free legal aid assistance to indigent people in the communities surrounding Mafikeng and offers professional and technical assistance to para-legal offices and advice centres in the Province. The Centre also trains candidate attorneys in preparation for the Attorneys Board Examination and for admission as attorneys. As a service to the public, the Centre holds seminars and workshops on cutting-edge legal issues and participates in radio talk shows and public media educational programmes.

Some recent highlights at the Community Law Centre are:

  • Our joint project with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development to give unemployed law graduates opportunities to develop workplace experience.

  • Our partnership with the Umsobomvu Youth Fund in developing the facilitation skills of law students, paralegals and youth from non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

  • Street law workshops presented to more than 4 000 school learners at 168 schools.

  • Our representation on the North West Access to Justice Cluster, as well as Operation Blanket, an NGO dealing with developmental issues and primary health care.
