NWU and City Council visit Spain
Potchefstroom - During the second half of January 2010 a delegation from Potchefstroom visited Madrid, the capital of Spain, to settle a number of matters after Spain’s confirmation that they will have their home-base in Potchefstroom during the World Cup Soccer Tournament.
The delegation consisted of four members of the town council and two of the North-West University. Amongst others, the city council sent the mayor, Mr Maphetle Maphetle. The NWU’s delegation consisted of Prof Annette Combrink, who has now been elected chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and Mr James Botha, of the NWU’s legal office.
The group participated in the tourism show, Fitur, in Madrid, during which facilities in Potchefstroom were introduced, and the city council spoke to a city outside Madrid, Rojas, about “twinning”.
Facilities of the Spanish Soccer Federation were visited so that the NWU could acquaint itself with the standard of the facilities, since the university is currently in the final phase of setting up accommodation and practice facilities for the Spanish team, as well as facilities for the press (a large delegation) and families.
The entire Sports Village will be occupied by approximately eighty people, among whom are players, coaches, organisers, physiotherapists, masseurs, dieticians etc.
Combrink says it was heartening to establish that the standard of the facilities in Potchefstroom are indeed high – and it is also confirmed by the Spanish delegation that visited the University on 29 and 30 January to monitor the progress regarding the facilities.
She says they were extremely satisfied and impressed. The only outstanding matter, which is presently enjoying serious attention, is the extension of the air strip at the airport. The management of the Spanish team prefer not to use the roads from other airports to Potchefstroom and wish to get their team back in Potchefstroom as quickly as possible. The prospects look good to upgrade the airport with the cooperation of especially a partner from the private sector.
