POST GRADUATE STUDENTS

The Faculty offers two post graduate programmes, the Master of Education (MEd) and the Philosophiae Doctor (PhD). This programme is well structured and offers only research postgraduate programmes. These two programmes are accredited at the Higher Education Qualification Council (HEQC) of Department of Higher Education in South Africa. There are different research areas covered by expertise in their research area and qualified supervisors and promoters.

There are two modes of submission for example a dissertation within one of the specialized research projects or research articles on an approved research topic to fulfil the requirements of the specific degree. These degrees can be obtained on a full-time or part-time basis. MEdstudies can be obtained in a minimum duration of one year or a maximum duration of three years. The PhD-studies can be obtained in a minimum duration of two year or a maximum duration of four years. These MEd and PhD studies are within the focus of the faculty and  functions within research projects either funded in SA or part of international funded projects.

In order to make the programme in post-graduate studies accessible without restrain on the high quality of research this faculty stands for, the programmes offers also an approved Research Development and Support Programme. These students are monitored and equipped during their first year of enrolment by academics in order to be successful in submitting approved proposals in their field of research.

One of the advantages of application for a post-graduate study is the availability of the part-time or full-time post-graduate bursaries funded by the NWU. The Prestige Bursary for MEd and PhD-students of the Faculty is awarded by the Dean of the Faculty. These bursaries are only allocated to full-time students and competition is high due to the prestige’s nature of this award.

In 2012 six new part-time bursaries will be available to students. Three PhD-bursaries for two consecutive years and three MEd-bursaries per academic year will be sponsored with the prerequisite of being on campus at least three weeks per term. These bursaries will be subject and/or project related. The aim of these bursaries is to ensure that our PhD and MEd students can complete their research in the required time.
