Most recent Afrikaanse SkryfGoed sees the light
The new Afrikaanse SkryfGoed 4 is now available for everyone who wishes to write faultless Afrikaans texts. This collection of Afrikaans electronic proofing tool has just been developed by the Centre for Text Technology (CTexT®), a research and development centre at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus.
This most recent version of the ever-popular Afrikaanse SkryfGoed consists of four proofing tools for Microsoft Office, namely an Afrikaans spelling checker, grammar checker, thesaurus and hyphenator, and is entirely compatible with Microsoft® Office 2013 and Windows 8.
The grammar checker and thesaurus are one of a kind in Afrikaans for Microsoft Office, and the spelling checker is the only so-called second-generation spelling checker that currently exists for Afrikaans. This means that the most recent technology and advanced processing are used to deliver better results.
Afrikaanse SkryfGoed 4 is also regularly updated to adapt to the most recent spelling rules and developments in Afrikaans, and these proofing tools have already generated positive reactions from several language experts and language practitioners.
"I really no longer want to work on an Afrikaans text without my SkryfGoed”, writes Mr Tom McLachlan, chairperson of the Afrikaanse Taalkommissie. Tom, just like many South African writers, academics and business persons, is a loyal user of Afrikaanse SkryfGoed.
Mr McLachlan says he does not want to work without Afrikaanse SkryfGoed, because the grammar checker often “… helps me to see mistakes that I have made due to hurried typing.” The hyphenator even breaks up words at the correct places to a following line.
According to Prof Franci Greyling, writer and lecturer in Creative Writing on the Potchefstroom Campus, the Afrikaans spelling checker is a useful way in which to quickly spot spelling as well as typing errors. She furthermore makes frequent use of the thesaurus to find alternatives for over-used or stereotypical words in her writing.
“I am one of the loyal followers and supporters of Afrikaanse SkryfGoed. I cannot even imagine a time that I had to make do without it! I make use of all the functions. The spelling checker is especially valuable because it quickly points out my typing errors,” writes Prof Wannie Carstens, chairperson of the SA Academy for Science and Art [SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns].
Afrikaanse SkryfGoed 4 is now available at www.spel.co.za or verkope@spel.co.za. Interested persons can also call 018 297 0164 for any enquiries, orders or technical assistance.
